What Makes a Good Novel?

There are numerous novels and writers in the world, but sometimes, when you read a novel, you notice that the writer is exceptionally skilled, especially if the writer is famous and has already established a significant reputation. If we want to ask ourselves what makes a novel good, there are many details to consider. For me, the following elements are crucial:

“A novel is an extended work of narrative fiction usually written in prose and published as a book”

Firstly, the plot. In a well-crafted novel, the actions unfold gradually until they reach a climax, where the key elements of the story are resolved. Following this, the author provides explanations for the preceding events.

Another important aspect is the level of detail. When the author provides detailed descriptions of everything within the novel, it enhances the reader’s experience. For example, when introducing a new character, the author should describe the character’s features, their role in life, and whether they are good or bad. These details should be discovered by reading the novel. Additionally, describing the settings and ensuring that the story adheres to a specific period and respects the environment and culture of that time is essential. For instance, if the story is set in the Middle Ages, the characters should think and behave like people from that era, ensuring the novel’s realism.

Furthermore, incorporating multiple storylines within the novel can add depth. There should be a main storyline and minor subplots, such as friendships or discoveries, that make the novel more realistic.

Lastly, the novel should not be too predictable. The reader should be challenged to think hard and try to figure out what will happen next. The events should not be too obvious, so the reader cannot easily predict the outcome.
