My review : Frankenstein

I recently finished reading "Frankenstein" by the renowned English author Mary Shelley. The novel turned out to be quite different from what I had expected. It tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a man fascinated by science who decides to create another human being. Although this concept might seem fictional, the depth of the tragedy and the story is profound.

The creature, often referred to as Frankenstein’s monster, is hideous because he is made from parts of deceased people. As he begins to interact with real people, he is universally despised and rejected due to his appearance. Despite his monstrous exterior, the creature is actually kind-hearted and strives to be good. He learns human language, but when people discover his true nature, they shun him solely because of his looks.
Mary Shelley emphasizes that there is no correlation between a person’s appearance and their character. This is evident in how the monster, despite his good intentions, is judged harshly by society. The novel illustrates the saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.”
The monster eventually asks Victor to create a female companion for him, as he cannot bear the loneliness and rejection. However, Victor refuses, fearing that these creatures could destroy humanity if they were to reproduce. In retaliation, the monster seeks revenge by killing Victor’s family members one by one. Ultimately, Victor decides to destroy his own creation, but he dies in the process. The monster, realizing that revenge has not brought him happiness, decides to end his own life.
What I found compelling about this novel is its dual narrative. The first part is from the monster’s perspective, making you sympathize with him. The second part is from Victor’s point of view, offering a contrasting perspective. As a reader, you are left to judge the characters and their actions. The novel taught me that society often creates its own monsters by mistreating individuals, turning them into what they are perceived to be.
